Luxfer Care delivers expert aftercare to help operators maximise performance and limit downtime of clean fuel systems
A specialist and comprehensive aftercare, maintenance and technical support programme for alternative fuel systems has been launched by Luxfer Gas Cylinders – and it’s the first of its kind in Europe.
Named Luxfer Care, the scheme helps companies to install, commission, maintain, and optimise their hydrogen and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) systems, to ensure long-term peak performance, safety and peace of mind.
It combines spare parts provision, on-site troubleshooting, warranty support and technical diagnostics — all delivered by a highly experienced team of engineers.
Crucially, it was developed in response to a gap in the market. As Luxfer Gas Cylinders deployed more hydrogen and CNG systems across Europe, Australia and Korea, it became clear that ongoing support was a critical — and unmet — need across these regions.
Led by Alex Millward, the Luxfer Care team is already helping over 25 organisations across Europe and beyond, from transport operators and marine innovators, to clean energy pioneers.
He explains: “As the hydrogen sector continues to grow, we are seeing increased demand for partnerships that safeguard the investments organisations are making in alternative fuel systems. Luxfer Care gives customers the confidence to keep innovating.
“While hydrogen and CNG technology matures, Luxfer Care will help customers bridge the knowledge gap. And thanks to our significant legacy in gas storage solutions, we can lend our expertise to systems that feature Luxfer products, but also those developed by third parties.”
No other hydrogen or CNG system manufacturer in Europe currently offers a package like Luxfer Care, which gives:
- Access to expert engineers who know their systems inside out
- Integrated service efficiency — removing the burden of managing complex hydrogen system supply chains that can number around 40 suppliers
- Flexible, on-the-ground support when operators need it most
“There’s still a major skills gap in the hydrogen industry,” adds Alex. “At Luxfer, we’ve spent decades developing alternative fuel systems — and our engineers have been hands-on with everything from trains to terminal tractors. That knowledge is rare, and we’re using it to support customers as they scale.”
Examples of where Luxfer Care is already making a difference include:
- The UK’s first hydrogen-powered train – a high-profile, complex, multi-supplier project launched ahead of COP26. Luxfer developed a bespoke hydrogen system to the customer’s specification. Following trials over two years, Luxfer Care was commissioned for six months of iterative optimisation, from diagnosis to final testing.
- A clean marine innovator – integrated a third-party hydrogen system into a prototype canal boat. When filling and operation challenges arose, Luxfer Care’s engineers visited the site daily, diagnosing and correcting misconfigured components and crucially, enabling the vessel to move from its dock where it would otherwise have been stranded during the winter.
- A major UK bus manufacturer – has been a customer of Luxfer Gas Cylinders for several years, embedding its hydrogen systems into the required bus design and benefiting from Luxfer Care support as part of its ongoing fleet development.
